There are a lot of considerations to be made when looking at your van leasing options, but given the significant amount of time you’ll be spending on the road; safety should be a top priority. Below is our list of the five safest vans available to drivers this year, starting with the UK’s favourite: the Ford Transit.

  1. Ford Transit

In order to determine the safety and reliability of this van, Ford subjected the Transit to nearly 700,000 miles of driving in a variety of conditions, from smooth and dry to slick and slippery. This extensive testing programme proved the Transit to be amongst the most durable and reliable vans on the market today.

The van is also outfitted with some of the most state of the art safety features, including:

  • ESC stability control
  • Curve Control technology
  • Load Adaptable Roll Stability
  • Trailer Sway Control
  • Front, side and curtain airbags
  • Tyre pressure monitoring
  • Lane keeping assistance
  • Reversing camera
  1. Ford Transit “Custom”

There are many reasons why the Transit “Custom” continues to top many lists, and one area where it certainly doesn’t fall short is in the safety department. Boasting all of the same safety features of the basic Ford Transit, the newest Custom model also comes equipped with:

  • Hill Start Assist: This prevents a van from rolling backwards when starting on a hill.
  • Driver Alert: For those who are on the road for long hours. Driver Alert monitors your driving behaviour and is able to detect any changes in your activity that may signal fatigue.
  • Emergency Brake Light System: When a driver of this van brakes hard, the brake lights will flash to warn other drivers.

It’s important to note that the brand new Transit Custom is the first, and also the only, van in its class to have received a 5-star rating by Euro NCAP.

  1. Vauxhall Vivaro

The Vivaro has enjoyed a longstanding reputation as being both safe and reliable, and the newest model doesn’t disappoint. Along with having an ESP stability controls system, the van is able to detect when a trailer is fitted to it, and then adjusts its stability control settings to accommodate. The van comes equipped with driver’s airbags, and Sportive models of the Vivaro come along with parking sensors. Other options include:

  • Thorax airbags
  • Curtain airbags
  • Rear reversing camera
  1. Volkswagen Caddy

As the name suggests, the VW “Caddy” is the smallest van on our list, but boasts a number of important safety features including electronic stability control, driver’s-side airbag, and side and curtain airbags. Some models such as the Trendline and Highline are outfitted with heated electronically adjustable mirrors.

  1. Citroen Berlingo

Versatile and sportier than other vans on this list, the Berlingo is a durable van with a few safety options. Unfortunately, the only model to be outfitted with electronic stability control is the DGS6 model; though all vans do come with a driver’s side airbag (passenger side airbags and side airbags can be added for an additional fee).
